Project overview

Original paintings released directly to the forces of nature.

Driftworks Series I is an experiment in surrendering original art to the river. Each painting began in the studio as a small river study from my view here during different times of the year, then entered a bottle with a short note inviting the finder to become part of the magic.

With this project the tide is the curator, wind as installer, shoreline as gallery wall, and the eventual finder as the final hand in the exhibit of the paintings.

Inside each sealed bottle is one original painting, a hand written message, and a special invitation. A bottle might be found quickly, travel far, return to marsh grass, wash onto a beach, or disappear into the river legend forever.

Finder note: If you found one of these bottles, please report the name of the painting, the date, and the location where it came ashore plus a photo.

How the project works

Art released to the forces of nature.

Prepare

Each work has a unique name and was paired with a note and a special invitation for the finder.

Seal

The bottles were corked and properly sealed with red wax making each bottle a tiny floating art time capsule.

This first fleet entered the Penobscot River from Winterport, Maine on June 21st, 2026 at maximum high tide.
